Plan your visit

Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park sits on a long sealed road west of Alice Springs, not at a single lookout. A good day is one walk you can finish, enough water, respect for the heat, and the three fee systems kept separate. For what is open today, use NT Parks.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees, camping bookings, Larapinta trail fees and Mereenie Loop permits are never affiliated.

How long do I need?

Typical planning ranges (not a clocked diary): Alice Springs–Simpsons Gap is often about 20 minutes west on sealed Larapinta Drive; Alice–Ormiston Gorge is often about two hours sealed each way (~135 km). People who should not casually day-trip the Pound from a late brunch in Alice: anyone stacking Simpsons + Ellery + Standley + Ormiston + Sonder into one daylight window, or starting west after the heat has already won.

Fuel, food, medical — by intent

Last reliable supermarket, fuel and hospital culture sits in Alice Springs — not at Ormiston, not at Glen Helen gorge, and not on a Larapinta ridge. Fill before you leave town. Do not treat the Ormiston kiosk (officially listed 10am–4pm daily until end September 2026 — checked 14 Aug 2026; still confirm) as a backup restaurant.

Families / easy corridor

Alice Springs for fuel, food, water and a recovery meal. Simpsons then Ellery is the honest mixed-ability day. Soft commercial searches: stay hub. Official camping stays on parkbookings.nt.gov.au.

Early Pound / west-end starts

Leave Alice with full tanks and 3 L+ water each. Hermannsburg is a western service hint, not a substitute for Alice. Glen Helen gorge is NT Parks; the commercial lodge is a different product — phone before you plan a bed or meal. Mereenie toward Watarrka is a separate permit road.

Medical / emergencies

For emergencies call 000. 000 needs a signal. NT Road Report: 1800 246 199. Visitor information / Mereenie permits: Tourism Central Australia. This site is not a clinic or rescue desk.

Official: NT Parks — Tjoritja · park bookings · park-open · NT Road Report.

Three fee systems — never merge them

Do not treat any fee table on a third-party site (including this one) as current. Tjoritja uses three official systems plus a private operator at Standley Chasm. This site never sells or affiliates any of them.

System 1

Day vehicle / Parks Pass (entry only)

Required for most non-NT residents entering NT Government-managed parks including Tjoritja. NT residents typically exempt with proof — verify. Online purchase only via parkbookings.nt.gov.au. Covers entry only — not camping, not Larapinta overnight fees, not Kakadu or Uluru-Kata Tjuta (Parks Australia).

Official NT Parks table (checked 14 Aug 2026 — still confirm before you pay): 1-day adult $10 / child $5 / family $25 / concession $8 · 3-day $20 / $10 / $50 / $16 · 2-week $30 / $15 / $75 / $24 · 1-month $45 / $22 / $110 / $36 · annual $60 / $30 / $150 / $48.

System 2

Camping fees (separate)

Book and pay online before arrival — no on-site payment. Designated sites only (Ellery, Ormiston, Redbank Woodland/Ridgetop, Serpentine, Finke 2 Mile, Larapinta trail camps, education sites). Official Category B (checked 14 Aug 2026): adult $10 / child $5 / family $25 per night. Category A is $15 / $8 / $38; Category D $20 / $10 / $50. NT Parks lists Ormiston Gorge as Category B (caravans allowed).

No pets, no generators. Fires prohibited at Ormiston; designated pits only elsewhere; collect wood outside the park. Treat/boil tank water — it can run out.

System 3

Larapinta overnight trail fee

Official overnight trail fee (checked 14 Aug 2026): $25 per person (adult or child 5–17) per night, capped at $125 for 6+ consecutive nights. Children under 5 free. No family rate. This is in addition to camping. Book online.

Day walks and short sections: no trail fee. Standley Chasm charges its own private fees for passage/camping.

Camping (official sites only)

Camp only in designated sites booked on parkbookings.nt.gov.au. Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge, Redbank Gorge Woodland/Ridgetop, Serpentine Chalet, Finke 2 Mile and Larapinta trail camps are the usual names — confirm the live list. Caravans are allowed at some 2WD sites (Ormiston, Ellery commonly listed — verify).

  • No pets. No generators. Leave no trace.
  • Fires prohibited at Ormiston Gorge and on Larapinta trail camps. Designated pits only elsewhere. Collect wood outside the park.
  • Tank water must be treated or boiled and can run out — bring drinking water as the default.
  • Glen Helen gorge is an NT Parks site. The commercial lodge/camp (Discovery / G’day Parks) is a different product — check the operator page and phone before you plan a bed or meal. Do not treat this guide as a booking.

Map orientation

Mental model: Alice Springs is the gateway · sealed Larapinta Drive then Namatjira Drive west · Simpsons Gap close to town · Standley Chasm (private) · Ellery Creek · Ochre Pits · Ormiston Gorge / Pound (~135 km) · Glen Helen / Redbank / Mount Sonder at the western end. The park covers more than 2,500 km² along about 161 km of range. Day visitors see a few sites, not the whole reserve.

Getting there

Fly into Alice Springs Airport, then self-drive. There are no commercial flights or trains into the park, and no ferry. The primary visitor corridor is 2WD-sealed in normal conditions.

  • From Alice Springs: west on Larapinta Drive then Namatjira Drive. Simpsons Gap ~18 km; Ormiston Gorge ~135 km / ~2 hours typical.
  • Bicycle: 17 km sealed Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path from near Flynn’s Grave into Simpsons Gap.
  • 4WD / unsealed: last ~5 km to Redbank Gorge commonly unsealed (high-clearance 4WD recommended); Birthday Waterhole, Hugh Gorge, Roma Gorge, Finke River Two Mile and some Larapinta trailheads.
  • From Watarrka (Kings Canyon): unsealed Red Centre Way / Mereenie Loop — high-clearance 4WD recommended, corrugated, can close after rain. Transit permit required (Aboriginal land). Tourism Central Australia publishes $5 per vehicle, valid 3 days, in person (checked 14 Aug 2026 — confirm at purchase). No camping on the Loop itself.
  • Always check the NT Road Report (or 1800 246 199) and the park open-status page before you leave. Flooding, fire and maintenance close sections.

Heat, waterholes & walk hierarchy

Extreme heat is the dominant walk hazard. There are no tides, crocs or snow here. Permanent waterholes stay very cold even in summer — hypothermia from long swims is a real picnic-day risk. No jumping or diving; submerged hazards are normal.

  • Ormiston Pound Walk — signature day walk. Official park-open note (checked 14 Aug 2026): the loop currently requires a short swim through deep, cold water. Do not start if you will not swim. Re-check live.
  • Ghost Gum Lookout — shorter Ormiston Plan B. Official note: the Ghost Gum loop currently requires swimming/wading; return via the lookout if you will not swim.
  • Ellery Creek Big Hole — picnic / swim decision
  • Simpsons Gap — easiest first stop from Alice. Official Simpsons page: swimming is not permitted.
  • Larapinta Trail — multi-day / sections for fit, prepared walkers

Communications & coverage

Official park safety pages do not publish a detailed carrier map. This guide will not invent Telstra/Optus coverage or require Starlink. Plan as if you will lose signal in gorges, on remote Larapinta sections, and in much of the Pound.

  • 000 requires a mobile signal. If you have none, you cannot complete that call.
  • The Emergency+ app helps emergency services locate you where a signal exists.
  • Download offline maps before you leave Alice. Avenza is commonly recommended for official NT Parks maps.
  • For multi-day Larapinta or remote day walks, a PLB or satellite messenger is a realistic optional planning note (official rescue examples exist). It is not a substitute for telling someone your plan.
  • Camp internet is not a Parks-site product. Do not plan work calls from Ormiston camp.
  • Note emergency call device locations on official NT Parks safety pages — they move. Check the live safety page, not a screenshot from this guide.

Weather, seasons & safety

Use the BOM Alice Springs forecast — not a coastal capital page. Cooler months (April–September) are the walking season. Summer (October–March) is extreme heat. Peak cool-season weekends get busy at Simpsons and Ormiston; Larapinta and 4WD sites stay quieter. Flies, dust, rock and limited shade are normal, not a surprise.

  • Check BOM Alice Springs and NT Parks open-status the morning you walk.
  • Carry and drink plenty of water. Hat, SPF, insect net, sturdy shoes, first aid. Avoid strenuous activity in the heat of the day.
  • Keep the vehicle maintained; lock valuables. Isolation on longer walks means help is slow.
  • Emergencies: call 000 if you have reception. This website cannot assist with rescue.

Visit FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Do I need an NT Parks Pass for Tjoritja / West MacDonnell?

Most interstate and international visitors need an NT Parks Visitor Pass for NT Government-managed parks including this one. NT residents are typically exempt with proof (for example an NT licence) — verify official eligibility. Buy only via parkbookings.nt.gov.au. The pass is entry only — not camping, not Larapinta overnight fees, and not Standley Chasm.

Does the Parks Pass include camping or the Larapinta Trail?

No. Keep three systems separate: (1) Parks Pass = entry; (2) camping = designated sites booked online; (3) Larapinta overnight consecutive days = a per-person nightly trail fee, usually on top of camping. Day walks do not use the overnight trail fee. Verify live rates on NT Parks.

Is Standley Chasm included in the Parks Pass?

No. Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye) is privately operated with its own entry, hours and camping. Use standleychasm.com.au only for those figures.

Do I need a 4WD?

Not for the main sealed corridor (Simpsons Gap, Ellery Creek, Ormiston Gorge, Glen Helen area). High-clearance 4WD is commonly recommended for the last unsealed kilometres to Redbank Gorge and for sites such as Birthday Waterhole, Hugh Gorge, Roma Gorge and Finke River Two Mile. Check the NT Road Report. Mereenie Loop toward Watarrka is a separate permit road.

Is there mobile reception in the park?

Official pages do not publish a carrier coverage map, and this guide will not invent one. Expect limited or no reception in gorges, remote sections and much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. The Emergency+ app helps where signal exists. Offline maps (Avenza is commonly recommended) and a PLB or satellite messenger are realistic planning notes for remote days. Camp internet is not a Parks-site product.

When is the best time to visit?

The park is accessible year-round. Cooler months (roughly April–September) are most pleasant for walking. Summer (October–March) brings extreme heat — avoid strenuous walking in the middle of the day. Waterholes stay very cold even then. Heavy rain can close roads for short periods.

Can I see every gorge from Alice in one day?

No as a first visit. Simpsons Gap is about 20 minutes from Alice; Ormiston is about two hours each way. Pick an easy corridor (Simpsons + Ellery) or a committed Ormiston day — not both plus Standley and Sonder. If the list is already too long, use the Alice-day-too-long Plan B article.

Track conditions, fees, water levels and road status change. Official figures on this site were checked 14 Aug 2026 against NT Parks pages; this guide was editorially reviewed 20 Aug 2026 — still confirm live before you pay or walk.

Verify current conditions, fees and openings directly with NT Parks (nt.gov.au/parks) and the park booking system before travel. This is an unofficial guide.
