Mereenie Loop: West Macs toward Watarrka (Kings Canyon)
The unsealed Red Centre Way / Mereenie Loop is a permit road, not a shortcut. High-clearance 4WD, corrugations, no camping on the Loop, and a different park at the far end.

The sealed West Macs corridor is one product. The Mereenie Loop toward Watarrka (Kings Canyon) is another: high-clearance 4WD recommended, permit required, and no “we will camp when we are tired.”
This is not a scenic add-on after Ormiston. It is a transit road across Aboriginal land with corrugations, dust and weather closures. Treat it as a planned second journey or do not go.
This site does not affiliate the permit. Tourism Central Australia / Alice Springs Visitor Information Centre is the usual starting point for current process.
Different product from Namatjira Drive
Namatjira Drive to Ormiston is sealed and the default hire-car corridor. Mereenie is unsealed Red Centre Way toward Watarrka. Corrugations, dust, floodways and closure after rain are the point — not a footnote.
If your West Macs day already used the reverse clock, do not “just continue.” Go back to Alice and plan the Loop as its own journey.
Permit and outlets
The Loop crosses Aboriginal land. A transit permit is required. Tourism Central Australia publishes $5 per vehicle, valid 3 days from purchase, in person (checked 14 Aug 2026).
Outlets commonly listed: Alice Springs Visitor Information Centre, Hermannsburg General Store, Standley Chasm shop, Kings Canyon Resort, Kings Creek Station, Central Land Council. Confirm cost and outlets when you buy — it is not sold as an online Parks Pass.
This site does not sell or affiliate the permit.
Vehicle class and hire contracts
High-clearance 4WD is the published recommendation. A 2WD hire car that “looked tough at the airport” is still a sedan in the contract.
Read the hire agreement. Many forbid Mereenie. Recovery is slow and expensive. This guide will not talk you into a breach.
Fuel and water in Alice (or a confirmed western outlet). Do not treat Glen Helen lodge as a guaranteed servo.
After rain and the road report

Check the NT Road Report (roadreport.nt.gov.au / 1800 246 199) the morning you go. After rain the Loop can be closed or a bad idea even when a map still draws a line.
Official Tjoritja park-open notes (floodways, Redbank 4WD) are a different road. Do not assume one “open” means the other is fine.
No camping on the Loop
There is no “we will pull over when we are tired.” No camping on the Loop itself.
If you need a night before or after, book official Tjoritja camping (Ellery / Ormiston / Redbank as access allows) or confirm commercial / official options at the Watarrka end. Walk-up inventing is how people end up on the verge.
Then you are in another park
Watarrka / Kings Canyon has its own Parks Pass questions, no general park camping in the West Macs sense, and heat-management rules for the Rim Walk.
Use the Watarrka sister guide and NT Parks Watarrka page. Do not copy West Macs swim notes, kiosk hours or camp categories onto the canyon.
When not to go
Sedan or a hire contract that forbids the road.
Road report ugly, rain in the last day, or anyone already cooked from a Pound morning.
No permit in hand and no time to buy one in person.
A plan that needs a camp on the Loop itself.
Planning skeleton
Finish the West Macs product first (sealed corridor, booked camps, reverse clock). Then treat Mereenie as Day N+1 with a permit, a legal vehicle and a Watarrka plan.
Printable West Macs skeleton: the 2–3 day itinerary and day planner on this site. Mereenie itself is a permit-and-road-report problem, not a picnic itinerary.
FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I do Mereenie in a 2WD hire car?
Published advice recommends high-clearance 4WD. Hire contracts often forbid this road. After rain it can close. Check the NT Road Report and your hire agreement — this guide will not tell you a sedan is fine.
Can I buy the permit online?
Tourism Central Australia describes an in-person purchase (checked 14 Aug 2026). Confirm cost and outlets when you buy — it is not treated here as an online ticket.
Can I camp on the Loop?
No. No camping on the Loop itself. Plan nights in official Tjoritja sites (booked) or at commercial / official options at the Watarrka end — verify those separately.
Does a Tjoritja Parks Pass cover Watarrka?
Watarrka is a different NT Parks park with its own rules. Do not copy West Macs assumptions onto the canyon. Use NT Parks Watarrka pages and the Watarrka sister guide.

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
