Things to do in Tjoritja / West MacDonnell
Last reviewed · verify live conditions with NT Parks
Most first visits revolve around Simpsons Gap plus Ellery Creek, or a committed Ormiston Pound day. Overnight Larapinta and Redbank / Sonder are a different sport. Standley Chasm is private. Swimming is not guaranteed. Do not try to collect every gorge on a first Alice day.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees, camping bookings, Larapinta trail fees and Mereenie Loop permits are never affiliated.

Day one rule
Pick one primary experience (usually Simpsons, Ellery or a committed Ormiston). Do not collect every gorge on a first Alice day.
Heat / energy bail-out
A short Simpsons or Ellery stop and a turn back to Alice beats a forced Pound loop in heat. Bail-outs are competence.
Overnight / 4WD filter
Larapinta nights and Redbank only with bookings and a vehicle that matches the last kilometres. Sonder is not a casual add-on after Ormiston from Alice.
- 1
Simpsons Gap
First stop · easy · ~18 km west of Alice
Closest major gorge to Alice — short formed walks, red walls, rock-wallabies at quieter hours. A complete first morning can stop here. Official Simpsons page: swimming is not permitted.
- 2
Ellery Creek Big Hole
Picnic · cold swim · sealed corridor
The corridor’s picnic and swim decision. Water stays very cold even in summer. Designated camp is a separate booking. A good day without the Pound.
- 3
Ormiston Pound & waterhole
Signature day · Grade 3 · swim currently required
The walk that earns the drive: Pound amphitheatre, then the permanent pool. Official park-open note (checked 14 Aug 2026): the loop currently requires a short swim through deep, cold water. Do not start if you will not swim.
- 4
Ghost Gum Lookout
Short steep lookout · same precinct as the Pound
Shorter Ormiston Plan B when heat or the Pound swim is wrong. Official note: the Ghost Gum loop currently requires swimming/wading — return via the lookout if you will not swim.
- 5
Larapinta Trail
Multi-day · Grade 5 until further notice · bookings split
Twelve sections along the ranges. Overnight trail fee plus camping are separate products. Official park-open (checked 14 Aug 2026): treat all 12 sections as Grade 5 Difficult until further notice. Day sections do not pay the overnight trail fee.

Rock-wallabies & wildlife (etiquette first)
Dawn / dusk · no feeding · stay on path
Simpsons Gap is the best-known visitor site. Quiet early or late light on the rocky faces improves odds. Stay on the path. Never feed wildlife. This is Arrernte / Aranda Country — do not invent story for a caption.
- 7
Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path
Cycling · sealed · its own half day
About 17 km sealed from near Flynn’s Grave into Simpsons Gap. It is a ride (or a long walk) of its own — not a casual extra after a hot gorge stroll. Little shade. Confirm path status.
- 8
Standley Chasm (private)
Private operator · separate fees · mid-corridor
Angkerle Atwatye — privately operated. A Parks Pass does not cover it. Own gate, hours and Larapinta passage fees. Check standleychasm.com.au before you drive. Stay on the visitor path.
- 9
Redbank Gorge & Mount Sonder
Western end · 4WD · overnight better
Western chasm and the long silhouette. Official park-open: Redbank is high-clearance 4WD only. Sonder is a ridge morning, not a five-minute lookout from the car. Not a same-day add-on after Ormiston from Alice.

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
- HeadlampPre-dawn Pound starts, Sonder ridge, and getting back to the car before you are cooked
