Private operator — separate fees
Standley Chasm / Angkerle Atwatye is privately operated. Entry, camping and Larapinta passage fees are theirs. Link only to the official operator site and do not treat a blog price as current.
NT Parks Visitor Pass, park camping and Larapinta overnight trail fees are different systems. You may need more than one booking on a multi-day walk that passes through here.
Check opening hours before you drive. Weekend hours have differed from weekdays. If the gate is shut, you do not have a chasm day — you have a turnaround.
Respectful visit
This is an important place for Western Arrernte people. Stay on formed visitor paths, follow on-site rules, and do not invent ceremony or story for a caption.
Photograph from the visitor path. Do not scramble the walls. Treat the kiosk and staff as the people who run this place, not as a park ranger outpost.
How it fits an Alice day
If you only have a day from Alice, choose: chasm plus Simpsons, or keep driving west to Ellery or Ormiston. Trying to do all four plus a long lunch usually means a late, tired drive back.
The chasm walk is the product. It is not a five-minute photo stop you squeeze between two other gorges “because we are passing.”
Larapinta trailhead
Standley Chasm is a real Larapinta trailhead and passage point. Overnight and passage fees at the chasm are the operator’s, in addition to any NT Parks trail and camping fees for Parks-managed sections.
Day walkers who are not on consecutive overnight trail days do not pay the Larapinta overnight trail fee — but they still pay the private entry if they use this precinct. Keep the systems separate.
Highlights at a glance

Practical tips
- Check opening hours before you drive — weekend hours have differed from weekdays.

- Larapinta walkers: confirm trailhead access windows.
- If the gate is closed, do not invent a side track into the chasm.

FAQ — Standley Chasm
Short planning answers. Official NT Parks signs and the park-open page always win over this guide.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Does the NT Parks Pass cover Standley Chasm?
No. Standley Chasm is privately operated with its own entry (and camping) fees. Confirm current prices and hours on standleychasm.com.au only.
Is it on the Larapinta Trail?
Yes — it is a trailhead / passage point. Overnight and passage fees at the chasm are the operator’s, in addition to any NT Parks trail and camping fees for Parks-managed sections.
How far is it from Alice Springs?
About 50 km west on sealed Larapinta Drive. 2WD to the precinct. Still check hours before you leave town.
Can I camp here on the Larapinta?
Camping is the operator’s product, not an NT Parks campground. Book and pay on their terms. Parkbookings camp nights elsewhere do not include a Standley night.

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
- HeadlampPre-dawn Pound starts, Sonder ridge, and getting back to the car before you are cooked
