Why people stop
Ellery is the corridor’s social waterhole: picnic tables, a serious pool, and a campground that books out in the cool season. It is prettier and colder than many first-timers expect.
It is also a legitimate overnight base that shortens the next morning to Ormiston or Redbank compared with sleeping in Alice.
If the forecast is very hot, a short Ellery stop and a turn back to Alice can be a better day than forcing the Pound.
Swimming and cold water
Swim only if current official advice allows it and you accept cold, deep water with submerged hazards. No jumping or diving. Watch children — the hole is deep.
Water stays very cold even in summer. Hypothermia is a picnic-day risk, not only a winter story. Enter slowly. Get out if anyone is shivering or going quiet.
Verify swimming notes on NT Parks the morning you go. A photo from last July is not today’s advice.
Camping vs entry
Day visitors still follow Parks Pass rules. Overnight stays are a designated-camp booking on parkbookings.nt.gov.au. Official Category B (checked 14 Aug 2026): $10 / $5 / $25. No on-site payment.
Caravans are often listed as allowed at some 2WD sites including Ellery — confirm the current site rules on the booking page for your dates.
This site does not sell or affiliate those bookings.
How it fits the corridor
On a one-day Alice out-and-back, Ellery is the usual second stop after Simpsons — or the turnaround if anyone is cooked.
Do not add Ormiston “because we are close.” From Ellery the Pound is still a committed extra drive plus a serious walk. Pick one shape: easy corridor, or west to Ormiston.

FAQ — Ellery Creek
Short planning answers. Official NT Parks signs and the park-open page always win over this guide.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I camp at Ellery Creek?
Yes, in the designated campground only, booked and paid online before arrival. Camping fees are separate from the Parks Pass. No on-site payment.
Is the waterhole safe to swim?
Only if current official advice allows it and you accept cold, deep water with submerged hazards. No jumping or diving. Verify on NT Parks the day you visit.
How far is Ellery from Alice Springs?
West on sealed Larapinta then Namatjira Drive. 2WD in normal conditions. Budget more than a Simpsons pop-in — it is a real corridor stop, not 20 minutes from town.
Can I take a caravan?
Some 2WD park sites including Ellery are often listed as caravan-friendly. Confirm the live booking page for your dates. Do not assume every West Macs camp takes vans.

Best for: A 30–60 minute colour stop, photography, breaking a long drive
Banded ochre cliffs — a short stop on the western drive. Look, photograph from the path, do not climb or collect. Pair with Ellery or Serpentine, not as the day’s only goal.

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
- HeadlampPre-dawn Pound starts, Sonder ridge, and getting back to the car before you are cooked
