Glen Helen, Redbank Gorge & Mount Sonder

Western end of the visitor corridor: Glen Helen gorge country, Redbank’s narrow chasm, and Mount Sonder (Rutjupma). Official park-open (checked 14 Aug 2026): Redbank is high-clearance 4WD only. Glen Helen gorge is an NT Parks site; the commercial lodge is a different product — confirm the operator before you plan a bed.

  • Best for: Western icons, Sonder sunrise, Redbank wade, multi-day finishers
  • Time: Half day at Redbank; overnight nearby if you want Sonder dawn
  • West of Ormiston on Namatjira Drive. Sealed to the Glen Helen area; last ~5 km to Redbank commonly unsealed — high-clearance 4WD recommended.

The west is a different day

Once you pass Ormiston the day gets longer. Redbank and Sonder are better with an overnight. Adding them to a first Alice day after Simpsons, Standley and Ellery is how people drive home tired in the dark.

Hermannsburg (Ntaria) is the secondary western service town. Alice remains the real supermarket.

Mereenie Loop toward Watarrka is a separate 4WD + permit product — not a casual westbound extra from Redbank.

Access and 4WD

The sealed corridor gets you most of the way. The last unsealed kilometres to Redbank (often cited around 5 km) are the decision gate. High-clearance 4WD is the conservative call; after rain it can be the only call.

Check the NT Road Report and NT Parks access notes. Do not force a low sedan. Birthday Waterhole, Hugh Gorge, Roma Gorge and Finke River Two Mile are other 4WD or restricted sites — they are not this page, and they are not sedan surprises.

Redbank vs Mount Sonder

Redbank is a tight chasm and waterhole. Water can require wading. No diving. Mount Sonder (Rutjupma) is the long silhouette in most West Macs photos — a ridge morning, often a pre-dawn start, not a five-minute lookout from the car.

They share a western address and not much else in effort. Do one well. A gorge wade plus a full Sonder ridge on a hot afternoon is how groups come unstuck.

Glen Helen commercial status

Glen Helen Gorge is an NT Parks site (listed open on the 14 Aug 2026 park-open check). The commercial lodge/camp (Discovery / G’day Parks) is a different product. Water-supply closure notes have been published in recent years; do not invent an open restaurant or a bed. Check the operator page and phone before you plan a meal or a night.

The gorge landscape is still part of the West Macs story. Access and visitor services are not the same question.

FAQ — Glen Helen & Redbank

Short planning answers. Official NT Parks signs and the park-open page always win over this guide.

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Do I need a 4WD for Redbank Gorge?

The last section of the access road is unsealed. High-clearance 4WD is commonly recommended and may be required after rain. Verify live access on NT Parks and the NT Road Report. Do not force a low sedan.

Is Glen Helen open?

Treat commercial lodge/camping as a separate product from the gorge. Confirm with Discovery Parks Glen Helen (operator page / phone) before you depend on a bed, meal or fuel-adjacent service.

Can I do Sonder and Redbank after Ormiston from Alice?

Not as an honest first day. Sonder is a ridge morning. Redbank has an unsealed last stretch. Pair them with an overnight, not with a Simpsons-to-Ellery stack.

Is this the way to Watarrka?

Mereenie Loop toward Watarrka is a separate 4WD and permit product. It is not a casual add-on from Redbank. Read the Mereenie article and official permit notes before you invent a through-drive.

Standley Chasm (Angkerle Atwatye)

Best for: Chasm walk, culture-respectful visit, Larapinta section logistics

A privately operated chasm on Arrernte country — separate entry, hours and camping from NT Parks. A Larapinta trailhead and a popular mid-corridor stop. Always use the operator’s own site for fees.

Ellery Creek Big Hole

Best for: Swimming when allowed, picnic, overnight camp, families who will not do Ormiston Pound

Large permanent waterhole, picnic area and designated campground on the sealed western corridor. The swim/picnic stop — cold water, separate camping fees.

Ochre Pits & mid-range stops

Best for: A 30–60 minute colour stop, photography, breaking a long drive

Banded ochre cliffs — a short stop on the western drive. Look, photograph from the path, do not climb or collect. Pair with Ellery or Serpentine, not as the day’s only goal.
