Why start here
If you only have a morning from Alice Springs, Simpsons Gap is the sensible stop: real West MacDonnell walls, a short walk, and a chance at rock-wallabies without spending the whole day on Namatjira Drive.
If you have a full day, still consider it as the east-end orientation stop before Ellery or Ormiston — then leave before the heat and the coaches stack. A “quick look” still eats the westbound clock.
Come for orientation and wildlife, not wilderness solitude. If the gap is the only stop you have time for, that is still a real West Macs morning — just do not pretend you have seen Ormiston.
Walks that fit a Simpsons stop
Stay on the short formed paths into the gap. The cliffs are not a scramble and the waterhole is scenery first. Mixed-ability groups work here because the walk is short — that is also why it queues.
Look for black-footed rock-wallabies on shaded rock faces, especially quieter early or late light. Stay on the path, keep voices down, and never chase a photo off-track. If you do not see one, you still saw the gorge.
Official Simpsons page: swimming is not permitted. Treat the waterhole as scenery. Never dive. Cold water and submerged rock are normal even when the air is hot.
Bicycle path
The sealed Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path runs about 17 km from near Flynn’s Grave on Larapinta Drive into the gap. It is a ride (or a long walk) of its own, not a casual extra after a hot gorge stroll.
Confirm path status and carry water. There is little shade and no kiosk halfway. In October–March, start early or skip the full path.
Access, fees and crowds
About 18 km west of Alice on sealed Larapinta Drive — typically 20–25 minutes in good conditions. 2WD. Parks Pass rules apply for most non-NT residents. Check the NT Road Report after rain.
Cool-season weekends and tour mornings fill the day-use park. Arrive early or accept company. Lock the car and take valuables — isolation is less than Ormiston, but popular car parks still get opportunistic theft.

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
