Park overview

Tjoritja / West MacDonnell National Park stretches about 161 km west of Alice Springs along the West MacDonnell Ranges (Heavitree, Chewings and neighbours) — more than 2,500 km², jointly managed by NT Parks and Traditional Owners. Most visitors see a few gorges on the sealed road, not the whole reserve.

Always verify live conditions on the official NT Parks park page and open-status page. This site is independent and unofficial. It does not show live closures.

How to use these area guides: pick the precinct that matches time, heat and bookings, then open it for what not to get wrong, getting-there, fees and related walks. NT Parks sets track status, swimming notes, camping and official rules.

How to choose an area

Pick the stretch of road that matches the morning you actually have. One westbound goal beats five rushed stops.

Recommended order on any trip

  1. 1Decide Simpsons + Ellery, or a committed Ormiston day — not both plus Sonder.
  2. 2Buy the Parks Pass if you need one (most non-NT residents). It is not camping and not a Larapinta overnight fee.
  3. 3Check park-open, NT Road Report and any swim/wade note the same morning.
  4. 4Complete one honest stop. Turn around if heat or energy says so.
  5. 5Add a second precinct only if daylight and people still have legs.
  6. 6Standley Chasm only with live operator hours. Redbank only if the vehicle matches the last kilometres.

Geography in plain English

Think of the visitor park as a sealed spine west of Alice Springs: Larapinta Drive, then Namatjira Drive along the ranges. Simpsons Gap sits close to town. Standley Chasm (private) sits mid-corridor. Ellery Creek, the Ochre Pits and Ormiston Gorge continue west. Glen Helen, Redbank and Mount Sonder sit at the far end — where the last kilometres can turn unsealed.

Alice Springs is the supermarket, airport and overnight default. Hermannsburg (Ntaria) is a secondary western service town. There are no commercial flights or trains into the park. The Larapinta Trail uses many of the same trailheads, but overnight trail days are a separate booking product from a picnic at Ellery.

Quick comparison

Planning ranges only — verify roads, swimming notes and bookings the morning you go.

Do not merge these areas in your head

  • Simpsons is not Ormiston. Closer is not the same walk.
  • Parks Pass ≠ camping ≠ Larapinta overnight fee.
  • Standley Chasm is private. The Pass does not cover it.
  • Waterholes stay cold. Hypothermia is a summer story too.
  • Redbank’s last kilometres are not the sealed Ormiston car park.
  • Official: park-open · road report

FAQ — picking an area

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Which area should I open first?

Simpsons Gap if this is a first morning from Alice. Ellery Creek if you want a picnic/swim stop. Ormiston if you will actually walk or camp. Standley Chasm only if you have accepted it is private. Redbank / Sonder only with extra time and a vehicle that matches the last kilometres.

Can I treat Namatjira Drive as one area?

No. The sealed corridor strings several precincts together. A Simpsons morning is not an Ormiston day. Stacking every gorge plus Mount Sonder from Alice is how people drive home tired after dark.

Does the Parks Pass cover Standley Chasm?

No. Standley Chasm / Angkerle Atwatye is privately operated with its own gate, hours and fees. An NT Parks Pass is a different product. Confirm hours on standleychasm.com.au only.

Traditional Owner acknowledgment: Western and Central Arrernte / Aranda country, jointly managed with NT Parks via the Tyurretye Aboriginal Land Trust. This site does not speak for Traditional Owner groups — verify wording on official sources.
