Itineraries
Guide updated · verify NT Parks the morning you go
These plans are for real Alice Springs days and short stays — drive time, heat, water and energy included — not a “do everything” list. Pick the plan that matches your group, then open it for a timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free planner PDF / HTML anytime.
Every itinerary points you back to NT Parks for track status and alerts. Hard walks only appear where the plan names them, and only when official status is open.
Which plan fits you?
- One day from Alice — Simpsons first, then Ellery or a committed Ormiston stop. Not every gorge.
- 2–3 day West Macs loop — official camping, Pound walk in cool hours, optional Redbank.
- Larapinta sampler — vehicle-accessible sections, bookings split, water tanks untrusted.
- Family waterholes — Simpsons + Ellery. Hard “no Pound loop” rule.
- Heat-aware — October–March. One site, pre-dawn, mandatory abort.
If two plans both sound good, pick the shorter one. You can always add something later. You cannot add hours on the drive home.

Full day (leave early, return before dark)
One day from Alice Springs
First visit with a hire car and one realistic day on the sealed road
Simpsons Gap first, then one westbound stop (Ellery picnic/swim or a shorter Ormiston visit) — not Simpsons, Standley, Ellery, Pound and Sonder in the same day.

2–3 days / 1–2 nights
2–3 day West Macs loop
Visitors who will book official camping and actually walk Ormiston
Night at Ellery or Ormiston (official booking only), Pound walk in cool hours, optional Redbank if access and energy allow. Alice is still the supermarket.
Open plan →

2–4 days of chosen sections
Larapinta sampler (supported days)
Fit walkers who want trail flavour without a 20-day end-to-end
Pick vehicle-accessible sections, book any overnight trail nights + camps, and treat water tanks as untrusted. Day sections do not pay the overnight trail fee.

Full day, low stair ambition
Easier waterholes & lookouts
Families and mixed-ability groups who want gorges without the Pound
Simpsons Gap + Ellery Creek with a hard “no Pound loop” rule. Cold water, flies and shade still apply.

Shortened day or indoor abort
Heat-aware plan (October–March)
Anyone visiting in the hot season who still wants a gorge
Pre-dawn start, one short site, mandatory abort time. The Pound loop is a no unless you are experienced, starting in the dark, and willing to turn around.

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
- HeadlampPre-dawn Pound starts, Sonder ridge, and getting back to the car before you are cooked
