Heat-aware plan (October–March)
Shortened day or indoor abort · Best for: Anyone visiting in the hot season who still wants a gorge
Guide updated · verify NT Parks the morning you go
Pre-dawn start, one short site, mandatory abort time. The Pound loop is a no unless you are experienced, starting in the dark, and willing to turn around.

Summer West Macs are a different park. Extreme heat is the dominant hazard. Waterholes stay cold enough for hypothermia. Strenuous walking in the middle of the day is a bad plan.
If the BOM Alice Springs forecast is grim, a short Simpsons dawn stop and a return to town is still a good day. Do not push on to prove a point.
Official Pound note (14 Aug 2026): swim required — not a hot-day product. Official Ghost Gum loop also currently requires a swim; use the lookout only if you go west at all.
Verify BOM Alice Springs, NT Parks alerts and the road report the night before. This page is planning guidance only.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NT Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Forecast, abort time, one site
Check BOM Alice Springs — not a coastal city page. If the forecast is grim, Simpsons dawn only or stay in town. Pack more water than feels reasonable. Write the hard out-time on paper.
04:45–05:15
Leave Alice in the dark
Fuel and water in town. Headlamp in the bag. If anyone slept badly or is already nauseous, stay in town. Do not “see how we feel at 11.”
05:30–08:00
One site only
Simpsons Gap or Ghost Gum Lookout — not both plus Ellery plus Pound. Official Pound note (14 Aug 2026): swim required — not a hot-day product. Official Ghost Gum loop also currently requires a swim; use the lookout only.
08:00–09:00
Hard abort to Alice
Air-con, electrolytes, no “one more lookout.” Check official alerts if fire or storm cells are in the district. Midday car parks are ovens.
Late morning
Town recovery
Shade, food, fluids. If you still want a second outdoor hour, make it an Alice Springs indoor or short-town option — not a second gorge. Never leave pets or children in a vehicle. Not even “for a minute.”
Evening
Honest debrief
A short dawn stop counts as a successful summer day. If this felt tight, the next visit should be cool-season or a booked camp with a first-light walk — not a longer hot-day stack.

Parking & access tips
- Never leave pets or children in a vehicle. Not even “for a minute.”
- Start and finish before the rock cooks. Midday car parks are ovens.
- If Darken Drive looks ugly after a storm: stay in Alice.
- Have the abort time on paper in the car, not only in someone’s head.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Any loop with a live swim if you are already overheated
- Unsealed Redbank after storms
- Larapinta overnight in summer as a first trip
- Ellery + Ormiston “because we drove this far”
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Anyone visiting October–March who still wants a gorge
- Groups who will honour a hard abort time
- People who treat a short dawn stop as a successful day
Decision gates (say them out loud)
- If BOM Alice is grim: Simpsons dawn or stay in town — do not “see how we feel at 11”
- If anyone is nauseous, quiet or out of water: reverse now
- If someone suggests the Pound “because we drove this far”: that is how heat injuries start
What success looks like
- One short site in cool hours
- Everyone back in air-con with electrolytes
- No heroics, no unsealed spur, no second gorge
Related trail guides
- Simpsons Gap short walksTowering red cliffs and a waterhole close to Alice Springs — the classic first West Macs stop. Short formed walks, busy on weekends, and a known site for black-footed rock-wallabies at quieter times. Not a substitute for Ormiston.
- Ghost Gum Lookout (Ormiston)A short, steep climb from the Ormiston visitor area to ghost gums and gorge views. Official park-open note (checked 14 Aug 2026): Ghost Gum Lookout is open; the Ghost Gum Loop currently requires swimming/wading through cold water — return via the lookout if you will not swim. Use the lookout as Plan B when the Pound swim is wrong.

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
- HeadlampPre-dawn Pound starts, Sonder ridge, and getting back to the car before you are cooked
