Simpsons Gap short walks

Towering red cliffs and a waterhole close to Alice Springs — the classic first West Macs stop. Short formed walks, busy on weekends, and a known site for black-footed rock-wallabies at quieter times. Not a substitute for Ormiston.

Do not pair: Do not add Standley, Ellery, Pound and Sonder after this stop as if they were adjacent lookouts. Pick easy corridor or committed Ormiston — not both.

Turnaround: If the car park is chaotic or anyone is already hot, this is the morning. Skip the 17 km bicycle path as a whim add-on.

  • Treating the waterhole as a swim day — official Simpsons page (checked 14 Aug 2026): swimming is not permitted.
  • Letting a “quick look” eat the reverse clock so Ellery or Ormiston becomes a dusk drive back to Alice.

Official NT Parks pages and the sign in front of you override any guide page.

  • Easy formed walks / short gorge paths — confirm live notes
  • 30–90 minutes at the gap; longer if you add the bicycle path
  • Short paths into the gap; longer links exist toward the bicycle path
  • Effort: easy
  • Best for: First stop west of Alice, families, rock-wallaby watching, an easy gorge taste

Where you start

Simpsons Gap day-use area

Signed precinct west of Alice Springs on Larapinta Drive. Picnic facilities and short walks into the gap. Official Simpsons page (checked 14 Aug 2026): swimming is not permitted. Park-open also notes Darken Drive (Roe Creek Floodway) can be hazardous after water over the road — proceed with caution.

How to get there

  1. About 18 km west of Alice Springs on sealed Larapinta Drive — typically 20–25 minutes. 2WD.
  2. Official park-open note (checked 14 Aug 2026): Darken Drive (Roe Creek Floodway) can be hazardous after water over the road and large potholes. Proceed with caution.
  3. Bicycle access: 17 km sealed Simpsons Gap Bicycle Path from near Flynn’s Grave (Larapinta Drive) into Simpsons Gap. Confirm path status before you ride.
  4. Parks Pass rules apply for most non-NT residents. Parking fills on cool-season weekends — have a time buffer.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Arrive, toilets, lock the car, take valuables. Read any temporary signs before you walk.
  2. Walk the short formed paths into the gap. Stay on track; the cliffs are not a scramble.
  3. Look for rock-wallabies on shaded rock faces, especially quieter early/late light. Do not feed wildlife.
  4. Treat the waterhole as scenery. Official Simpsons page: swimming is not permitted. Never dive.
  5. If you still have energy, the bicycle path is a ride (or a long walk) of its own — not something to add in the heat on a whim.
  6. Leave with a reverse clock if Ellery or Ormiston is still on the day. Do not let this stop eat a committed westbound plan.

What to expect

Simpsons Gap is the closest major gorge to Alice Springs: a narrow break in the range, red walls, a waterhole, and short walks that work for mixed-ability groups. It is also the busiest site on many weekends.

Come for orientation and wildlife, not wilderness solitude. If the gap is the only stop you have time for, that is still a real West Macs morning — just do not pretend you have seen Ormiston.

Named walking options around the precinct include short formed paths into the gap plus Woodlands Trail and Cassia Hill Walk when listed open. Confirm names and status on NT Parks — do not invent a loop from a photo.

Rock-wallabies and quiet hours

Black-footed rock-wallabies use the rocky habitat around the gap. Dawn, dusk and quieter weekdays improve odds. Stay on formed paths, keep voices down, and never chase a photo off-track.

They are wild animals. If you do not see one, you still saw the gorge. Do not feed them. Do not scramble the cliffs for a better angle.

The waterhole is not a pool day

Official Simpsons Gap page (checked 14 Aug 2026): swimming is not permitted. Treat the water as scenery. Never dive. Submerged rock is normal even when the air is hot.

Ellery and Ormiston are the usual swim-decision sites — and even there the water stays very cold. Do not assume a gap photo from last year is today’s rule.

How it fits an Alice day

On a first morning this is the sensible first stop. Then you choose: easy corridor (Ellery picnic) or a committed Ormiston drive. Adding Standley, Ellery, Pound and Sonder after this “quick look” is how days collapse.

The bicycle path is a separate product. Ride it as its own half day, or skip it. Do not add 17 km of sealed path after a hot gorge stroll because it looked short on the map.

If this walk fails

Two usual wrecks: swimming here (officially not permitted) and treating the gap as a five-minute selfie that somehow still eats the westbound clock.

Do not pair with every named gorge plus Sonder. Easy corridor = Simpsons then Ellery. Committed west = skip the linger and drive for Ormiston with an early start.

Turnaround: chaotic car park or hot party → this is the morning. Bicycle path is its own half day. Official Simpsons page and on-site signs override this guide. Not walked — planning from NT Parks public pages.

Extra tips

  • Best first-morning stop from Alice before you continue west to Ellery or Ormiston.
  • Flies and midday tour groups are normal. Early is calmer.
  • Lock the car; take valuables. Isolation is less than Ormiston, but break-ins still happen at popular car parks.
  • Prescribed burns happen in this corridor — check park-open the morning you go.

Often paired with Ellery Creek— only if energy and weather allow.
