One day from Alice Springs

Full day (leave early, return before dark) · Best for: First visit with a hire car and one realistic day on the sealed road

Simpsons Gap first, then one westbound stop (Ellery picnic/swim or a shorter Ormiston visit) — not Simpsons, Standley, Ellery, Pound and Sonder in the same day.

A West Macs day from Alice works if you pick a shape: easy (Simpsons plus Ellery) or a committed Ormiston drive. It falls over when you try to hit every stop on Namatjira Drive.

Allow roughly two hours one-way to Ormiston in good conditions, plus walks, heat and time to get home. Sealed roads are not a reason to skip the NT Road Report. Simpsons is close to town; that closeness is how first-timers burn the westbound clock.

Parks Pass (if required) is sorted before you leave town. This itinerary does not include official camping. Standley Chasm is a private site with its own hours and fee — Parks Pass does not cover it, and it is not a “quick look” between Ellery and Ormiston.

Always verify park-open, Darken Drive / Roe Creek Floodway notes and the road report the morning you leave. This page is a planning skeleton only — not live status.

Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NT Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.

Timeline

  1. Night before

    Pass, water, abort plan

Buy or confirm the NT Parks Visitor Pass if you need one. Screenshot the official park page and road report. Pack 3 L+ water per walker, hat, SPF, fly net, layers. Agree out loud: primary stop + one optional upgrade. Set a “leave the last site by” time so you are not on the highway exhausted after dark.

  2. 06:00–06:30

    Leave Alice Springs

Fuel, water and snacks in town. Do not “just stop for a long breakfast.” Final check of NT Parks and the road report on hotel Wi-Fi. If anyone is already cooked, shrink to Simpsons only before you leave the driveway.

  3. 06:45–08:00

    Simpsons Gap

Short formed walks, rock-wallaby odds, toilets. Do not let this stop eat the westbound clock unless it is your only stop. Official Simpsons page: swimming is not permitted. Darken Drive (Roe Creek Floodway) can be hazardous after rain — proceed with caution or turn around.

  4. 08:00–09:30

    West on Namatjira Drive

Easy day: hold for Ellery Creek Big Hole. Committed day: keep rolling toward Ormiston and treat Ellery as a toilet/photo pause only if you still have the Pound or Ghost Gum clock. Do not add Standley Chasm as a third “quick look” unless you already dropped Ormiston.

  5. 09:30–13:00

Primary stop — Ellery or Ormiston

Easy day: Ellery picnic / swim decision. Cold deep water; no diving. Committed day: Ghost Gum + waterhole, or the full Pound only if heat, fitness and the live swim note agree (official 14 Aug 2026: swim required). If anyone will not swim, do not start the loop.

  6. 13:00–14:30

    Hard reverse clock

Turn around with fuel, fatigue and daylight in mind. There is less city traffic than Sydney, but tired outback driving is still how days end badly. An ice-cream in town beats a rushed Sonder attempt.

  7. Evening

    Alice + honest debrief

Rehydrate. Note what to drop next time (later start, extra gorge, invented Mereenie). If this felt compressed, the next trip should be a booked camp night — not a longer same-day stack.

Parking & access tips

  • Simpsons and Ormiston day-use parks fill on cool-season weekends — arrive early.
  • Do not leave bags visible.
  • Standley Chasm has its own entry gate and hours — not an NT Parks car park.
  • Official park-open: Darken Drive (Roe Creek Floodway) can be hazardous after rain — proceed with caution.
  • Have the reverse clock written down before you leave Alice.
  • Fuel in Alice. Do not treat Glen Helen as a guaranteed servo or café.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • Mount Sonder sunrise
  • Full Ormiston Pound loop if anyone will not swim (official note, 14 Aug 2026: swim required)
  • Mereenie Loop “since we are west”
  • Standley + Ellery + Ormiston on the same first day
  • Leaving Alice after a late brunch and still expecting a Pound finish

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • First-timers from Alice with one realistic sealed-road day
  • Hire-car groups who will pick one westbound goal
  • Families who can abort at Ellery without guilt
  • Anyone who will actually leave town early

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If anyone is already cooked at Ellery: Ellery is the day. Turn around.
  • If the Pound swim is live (official note, 14 Aug 2026) and the party will not swim: do not start the loop — Ghost Gum + waterhole only.
  • If Darken Drive or the road report looks ugly: shrink to Simpsons or stay in Alice.
  • If you still want Standley: drop Ormiston. Parks Pass does not cover the chasm.

What success looks like

  • Everyone back in Alice before dark with water still in the bottles
  • One clear gorge experience completed well — not five half-done pins
  • No invented Sonder or Mereenie add-on
  • Notes for next time: earlier start, overnight camp, or a committed Ormiston day

Related trail guides

  • Simpsons Gap short walksTowering red cliffs and a waterhole close to Alice Springs — the classic first West Macs stop. Short formed walks, busy on weekends, and a known site for black-footed rock-wallabies at quieter times. Not a substitute for Ormiston.
  • Ellery Creek Big HoleA large permanent waterhole under red cliffs — the classic West Macs swim/picnic stop when official advice allows it. Cold water, submerged hazards, and a designated campground booked separately from the Parks Pass.
  • Ormiston Pound WalkThe West Macs day that earns the drive: climb to a saddle over the 46+ km² Ormiston Pound, cross the flat amphitheatre floor, then return via the gorge creek bed to the main permanent waterhole. Official park-open note (checked 14 Aug 2026): the loop currently requires a short swim through deep, cold water.
