Easier waterholes & lookouts
Full day, low stair ambition · Best for: Families and mixed-ability groups who want gorges without the Pound
Guide updated · verify NT Parks the morning you go
Simpsons Gap + Ellery Creek with a hard “no Pound loop” rule. Cold water, flies and shade still apply.

Ellery Creek Big Hole

You can have a real Tjoritja day without Grade 3 exposure. You cannot skip heat, flies or the Parks Pass question.
Swimming is a maybe, not a promise. Children and cold deep water need an adult who will say no. Official Simpsons page: swimming is not permitted. Ellery is a different hole with its own cold-water test.
The high-satisfaction family product is usually Simpsons first, then Ellery picnic, then home. Mount Sonder, the Pound and Redbank can wait for a cooler morning with older kids who already hike.
Verify park-open and the road report the morning you leave. This plan is unofficial orientation only.
Track status, weather and closures change — verify on NT Parks before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only.
Timeline
Night before
Pass, water, hard no-Pound rule
Parks Pass if required. Screenshot park-open. Pack extra water, fly nets, shade, snacks that are not only “lunch”, and a dry change of clothes. Agree out loud: no Pound loop, no Redbank, no “we will see how we feel.” Official Simpsons page: swimming is not permitted.
06:30–07:00
Leave Alice
Fuel and toilets in town. Apply sunscreen (adults too). If anyone is already melting in the car park, Simpsons-only is still a good day. Do not invent a late brunch start and still expect Ellery.
07:15–09:00
Simpsons Gap
Short walks, toilets, wildlife watching at distance. Leave before anyone melts. Do not let this stop eat the Ellery clock unless it is your only stop. Watch children in the car park and at rock edges.
09:00–10:15
Drive to Ellery
Sealed Namatjira Drive. Snack and water in the car. If moods have already failed, turn around — Ellery is optional, not a debt. Standley is a private site; skip it unless you planned hours and fees in advance.
10:15–13:00
Ellery Creek picnic
Shade, food, swim only if official advice and the cold-water test pass. No diving. Abort to Alice if the group is done. If someone suggests “just a look at Ormiston”: that is a different itinerary.
Afternoon
Reverse to Alice
Ice-cream in town beats a rushed western add-on. If anyone is cold after a swim, get them dry and moving. Never leave anyone in a vehicle. Not even “for a minute.”

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
- HeadlampPre-dawn Pound starts, Sonder ridge, and getting back to the car before you are cooked
