Simpsons Gap

Alice Springs is the only full-service gateway that matters. The park stretches about 161 km west along the ranges. You visit sites along a road, not one compact precinct you can hop on a shuttle.
A West Macs day from Alice works if you pick a shape: easy (Simpsons plus Ellery) or a committed Ormiston drive. It falls over when you try to hit every stop on Namatjira Drive and still be home before dark.
This guide is unofficial. For fees, closures, swimming status and Darken Drive notes, use NT Parks and parkbookings.nt.gov.au. Planning times below are orientation only — not live status.
What you are actually signing up for
This is a road-and-gorge day, not a village walk. Fuel, water, snacks and the Parks Pass (if required) happen in Alice. There is no guaranteed café at Glen Helen — the gorge is NT Parks; the lodge/camp is a different operator product. Do not plan dinner there unless you have confirmed it is open.
Sealed bitumen to Ormiston is not a reason to skip the NT Road Report. Official park-open: Darken Drive (Roe Creek Floodway) on the Simpsons approach can be hazardous after rain. Proceed with caution or turn around.
The product is one clear gorge experience completed well. The risk is five half-done pins and a tired drive home after dark.
Two day shapes

Ellery Creek Big Hole
Iambexta · CC BY-SA 4.0 · Wikimedia Commons
Easy: Simpsons Gap plus Ellery Creek Big Hole. You will see red walls, have a picnic, and maybe swim at Ellery if official advice and cold water allow. Official Simpsons page: swimming is not permitted.
Committed: skip lingering and drive to Ormiston. Ghost Gum + waterhole is a complete visit. The Pound loop is a further upgrade — heat, rock, and (official 14 Aug 2026) a short swim through deep cold water. If anyone will not swim, do not start the loop.
Say the shape out loud before you leave the motel. Changing from easy to committed at 11 am is how people start the Pound cooked.
Drive time and the reverse clock
Allow roughly two hours one-way to Ormiston in good conditions, plus walks, heat and time to get home. Simpsons is close to town; that closeness is how first-timers burn the westbound clock.
Write a “leave the last site by” time before you leave Alice. There is less city traffic than Sydney, but tired outback driving is still how days end badly. An ice-cream in town beats a rushed Sonder attempt.
Fuel in Alice. Do not treat Glen Helen as a guaranteed servo.
Parks Pass before you leave town
The NT Parks Visitor Pass (if you need one) is sorted on parkbookings.nt.gov.au before you leave reception. It is entry only — not camping, not the Larapinta overnight trail fee, not Standley Chasm.
NT residents are typically exempt with proof (for example an NT licence) — verify on the official visitor-pass page. This site never sells the pass and never affiliates official fees.

What not to add

Ormiston Gorge waterhole

Standley Chasm is privately operated with its own hours. It is a fine mid-corridor stop if it replaces something else — not if it is the fifth pin on the map.
Mount Sonder sunrise is a different product: a pre-dawn drive, unsealed Redbank access (official: high-clearance 4WD only), and a ridge walk. Do not bolt it onto a first Alice day.
Mereenie Loop toward Watarrka is a different permit, a different road class, and a different day. Do not “just continue.”
Who this day is for
Good fit: first-timers with a hire car, a full day, and a group that will leave town early and pick one westbound goal.
Poor fit: anyone who slept in, anyone who wants “every gorge on Instagram,” and anyone who will not honour a reverse clock.
Families who want gorges without the Pound should use the easier waterholes itinerary — hard no-Pound rule, Simpsons + Ellery only.
What goes wrong (say it out loud)
Late brunch start → full car parks → rushed Ellery → invented Ormiston “just a look” → dark highway. Fix: earlier alarm or shrink the day.
Pound started at 11 am in heat, or started when someone will not swim (official note, 14 Aug 2026: swim required). Fix: Ghost Gum + waterhole, or come back on a booked camp night.
Standley + Ellery + Ormiston because “we drove this far.” Fix: drop one. Parks Pass does not cover Standley.
Mereenie “since we are west” without a permit or a 4WD hire that allows it. Fix: turn around on the sealed road.
Where this sits in a longer stay
One honest day from Alice is a complete first visit. Two nights of official camping (Ellery or Ormiston, booked before you leave town) is how you add the Pound in cool hours without stacking.

FAQ
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is a West Macs day trip from Alice realistic?
Yes, if you leave early and pick one westbound goal. It fails when groups stack Simpsons, Standley Chasm, Ellery, Ormiston Pound and Mount Sonder into the same day.
Do I need a 4WD?
Not for the main sealed corridor (Simpsons, Ellery, Ormiston, Glen Helen gorge area). Official park-open: Redbank is high-clearance 4WD only. Hugh Gorge, Birthday Waterhole and Roma Gorge are also high-clearance 4WD. Verify live and check your hire contract.
Can I add Standley Chasm on the same day as Ormiston?
Only if you drop the committed Ormiston product. Standley is privately operated, with its own hours and fee. Parks Pass does not cover it. Treat it as a replacement stop, not a fifth pin.
How early should I leave Alice?
Early enough that Simpsons is a short first stop, not a brunch. Cool-season weekends fill day-use parks. A 6 am departure is a realistic first-timer target if Ormiston is the goal.

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
- HeadlampPre-dawn Pound starts, Sonder ridge, and getting back to the car before you are cooked
