Alice day too long: Plan B when you stacked every gorge

You planned Simpsons, Standley, Ellery, Ormiston and Sonder from Alice in one daylight window — decision order for cutting the day without a dusk drive.

Decision first: if your plan still lists Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm, Ellery Creek, Ormiston Pound and Mount Sonder as one Alice day, the day is already too long. Cut it now. Do not “fix” it by leaving later and driving faster.

Order of operations: (1) admit the corridor is 161 km of range, not a precinct, (2) keep the group together and watered, (3) pick one remaining honest product that fits daylight and heat, (4) do not add Mereenie as consolation.

This is an unofficial planning guide. Drive times are typical tourism-orientation ranges, not a clocked diary. Fees, swim notes and floodways change. Verify with NT Parks and the NT Road Report the morning you go. Not walked for this article.

What “too long” actually means here

This park sits on a long sealed road west of Alice Springs. Simpsons Gap is close (~18 km, often about 20 minutes). Ormiston Gorge is about 135 km west — often about two hours in good conditions. Ellery sits in the middle. Sonder / Redbank is further again, with 4WD notes on the last kilometres to Redbank.

A stacked list looks efficient on a map because the road is a line. In daylight it is two or three separate days. Heat, flies, a swim decision and a picnic already fill a half day before you “quickly” add the Pound.

Plan B in decision order

Still in Alice or only as far as Simpsons, and already late or hot: Simpsons is the morning. Treat the waterhole as scenery (swimming is not permitted there). Skip the 17 km bicycle path as a whim. Reverse to town, or continue only as far as Ellery if the clock and heat still allow a picnic with a fatigue buffer home.

Already west of Ellery with a shrinking afternoon: Ellery is the day. Do not add the Pound “because we are close.” From Ellery the Pound is still a committed extra drive plus a Grade 3 loop that can require a swim.

Different calendar square: book an official camp (Ellery / Ormiston / Redbank as access allows) or keep Alice as the bed and try one committed west day tomorrow. Soft beds live on the stay hub; official camping stays on parkbookings.nt.gov.au.

What not to invent

Do not skip lunch to “save” Sonder. Do not treat Glen Helen lodge as a guaranteed dinner that makes a dusk finish safe. Do not add Mereenie Loop as a scenic consolation — it is a permit road toward a different park.

Do not copy a cool-season Instagram sequence into October–March. Extreme heat is the usual wreck, not a lack of gorges.

Official vs the sign vs this page

NT Parks park-open (swim notes, floodways, Grade 5 Larapinta until further notice, Redbank 4WD) and the NT Road Report win. On-site signs at Simpsons, Ellery and Ormiston win over a blog you read in Alice.

FAQ

Tap a question to expand the answer.

Can we still “just drop into” Ormiston if Simpsons ran long?

Usually no. Ormiston is about a two-hour sealed drive from Alice each way, plus a serious walk. A late Simpsons linger plus the Pound is how groups hit dusk on Namatjira Drive. Pick Ellery as the corridor finish, or abort to town.

Is Standley Chasm the automatic Plan B?

Only if you already wanted a private-operator stop, you have accepted its own entry and hours, and it still fits the reverse clock. It is not covered by the NT Parks Pass. Check standleychasm.com.au. A rest in Alice is often the honest choice.

Who should not day-trip the Pound from Alice at all?

Late starters, heat-sensitive parties in October–March, anyone who will not swim if the loop currently requires a swim, and groups treating Sonder sunrise as an add-on after the Pound. Overnight at a booked camp is the better product.
