Why Ormiston is the default westbound goal
Simpsons Gap shows you the range. Ormiston shows you why people stay. The Pound is a 46+ km² amphitheatre; the waterhole is permanent; the camping is a real base for a second morning toward Redbank or a Larapinta section.
Budget the drive. From Alice it is about 135 km / two hours sealed in good conditions. From an Ellery or Ormiston camp it becomes a walk, not a highway day.
If you only drive west once, drive here. Then do one honest product: the Pound if heat and the swim note agree, or Ghost Gum plus the waterhole if they do not.
Pound loop vs Ghost Gum
The Pound walk is typically published around 8.5–9.5 km and 3–4 hours at Grade 3. Anticlockwise is the usual planning shape: climb to the saddle for amphitheatre views, cross the floor, return via the gorge creek bed to the main waterhole. Verify live notes at the walks shelter.
Official park-open note (checked 14 Aug 2026): the Pound loop currently requires a short swim through deep, cold water. The Ghost Gum Loop currently requires swimming/wading — return via the lookout if you will not swim. Re-check live the morning you go.
Ghost Gum Lookout is the named Plan B: a shorter steep climb from the same precinct. Use it when heat, fitness or the swim note says no. It is still a good visit.
Site rules that surprise people
Fires are prohibited at Ormiston Gorge. No pets, no generators. Tank water must be treated and can run out. Book camping online before you arrive.
The Larapinta Trail passes through. Overnight trail fees apply only to consecutive overnight trail days — not to a casual Pound day walk. Keep the three fee systems separate.
The kiosk is seasonal. Carry lunch and water anyway. The ranger station and walks shelter are where you re-read today’s advice, not a blog tab from last night.
Getting there and staying
Sealed Larapinta then Namatjira Drive. 2WD typical. Caravans are often listed as allowed at this 2WD camp — verify current site rules. Parks Pass (entry) and camping are separate bookings.
Cool-season weekends fill the day-use park. Start the Pound at first useful light in warm months. Reception is limited in the gorge — download maps in Alice.

Tap a question to expand the answer.
How long is the Ormiston Pound Walk?
Published planning figures are typically about 8.5–9.5 km and 3–4 hours at Grade 3. Verify live distance, grade and any swim/wade requirement on NT Parks.
Can I camp at Ormiston?
Yes, at the designated campground, booked online in advance. Camping fees are separate from the Parks Pass. No fires at this site. No on-site payment.
How far is Ormiston from Alice Springs?
About 135 km west on sealed Larapinta then Namatjira Drive — typically around two hours in good conditions. Check the NT Road Report after rain.
What if I will not swim?
Read the live swim/wade note. If a swim is required and the party will not do it, do not start the loop. Ghost Gum Lookout plus the waterhole is the honest Plan B.

Best for: A 30–60 minute colour stop, photography, breaking a long drive

What to bring
Practical kit for heat, water, rock and limited reception
- Water capacity 3 L+Heat is the dominant hazard. Tank water can run out and must be treated — carry more than you think you need
- Sun hat + high SPFOpen Pound floor and ridge lines have little shade; UV is severe year-round
- Light long-sleeve sun shirtBetter than burning through a singlet on Ormiston or Larapinta ridges
- Sturdy trail shoesRock-hopping, creek beds and loose ridge rock — fashion sneakers fail here
- Day pack 20–30 LWater, electrolytes, first aid, layers and a dry bag for a possible gorge wade
- Electrolytes / salty snacksSweat loss in dry heat is easy to underestimate until you cramp on the exit
- Insect head net / fly veilFlies are normal, not a surprise — especially still mornings at waterholes
- Warm layer for nightsCool-season nights (April–September) drop hard after 35 °C days
- Personal locator beacon or sat messengerReception is limited in gorges and on much of the Larapinta. 000 needs a signal. Optional planning item — not a coverage map
- Offline maps (Avenza / downloaded)Official park maps + Avenza are recommended. Do not rely on live data in the Pound
- First-aid + blister kitRocky days and isolation — help is slow on longer walks
- Water treatment (camping)Treat or boil tank water at Parks sites; bring your own drinking water as the default
- Dry bag (gorge swim / wade)Official 14 Aug 2026: Pound loop and Ghost Gum loop require a swim — keep phone and layers dry, or skip the loop
- HeadlampPre-dawn Pound starts, Sonder ridge, and getting back to the car before you are cooked
